By using weekends and bank holidays to book strategic leave, you can turn five days of holiday into 11 in 2022.
For 65% of UK employees who value work-life balance more than salary or even job security in 2021, taking regular breaks, flexible working, and focusing on mental and physical health are all crucial. Even though you’re not physically in the office, it’s still important to book time off and use your leave days throughout the year. This will help your company avoid an annual leave bottleneck and help you avoid burnout.
Looking at upcoming bank holidays for 2022, there are several opportunities to use your leave days strategically for maximum days off. Get creative, and you could even double the length of your holiday.

January
With Christmas 2021 and New Year 2022 both falling over weekends, there are some substitute days coming up in December and January. These are as follows:
- Mon 27 Dec 2021 (Christmas Day substitute day)
- Tue 28 Dec 2021 (Boxing Day substitute day)
- Mon 3 Jan 2022 (New Year’s Day substitute day)
Start your holiday from Saturday the 25th of December and book time off until Tuesday the 4th of January – you’ll get a 10-day holiday by booking just three leave days. That’s not counting any days you might get from work just before Christmas.
April/ May
Easter celebrations mean a long weekend in mid-April, and there’s an early May holiday coming up this year as well. The bank holidays in April and May are:
- Fri 15 Apr 2022 (Good Friday)
- Mon 18 Apr 2022 (Easter Monday)
- Mon 2 May 2022 (May Bank Holiday)
You could use this opportunity to take an extra-long break by turning nine days of leave into an 18 day holiday, effectively doubling your time off. If you’re planning a holiday or a staycation, this could be the ideal time to book it.
June
With springtime celebrations and the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, we’ll get two bank holidays at the beginning of June:
- Thu 2 Jun 2022 (Spring Bank Holiday)
- Fri 3 Jun 2022 (Platinum Jubilee Bank Holiday)
Take your leave from Thursday the 2nd to Monday the 13th for a re-energising mid-year break. You’ll get 11 days off, with only 5 of those coming from your annual leave.
August/ September
Monday the 29th of August is the Summer bank holiday. That means you can take a holiday from Saturday the 27th of August through to Monday the 5th of September, giving you a 9-day break while using 4 days of leave.
December/ January 2023
Christmas 2022 will also fall over a weekend, giving us Boxing Day on Monday the 26th and a Christmas substitute day on Tuesday the 27th.
You could book four days of leave and enjoy a full 10 days off, returning to the office refreshed on Tuesday the 3rd of January 2023.
Holiday hint: Before you start booking your time off, have a look online to check that your chosen destination is cleared for safe travel.
