Employees in Singapore typically face some of the longest working hours in the APAC region, with most working around 44.6 hours a week. Hong Kong follows close behind with a 44-hour work week.
Compared to Sydney, where employees typically spend 39-hours at work every week, those in Singapore face several challenges when it comes to work-life balance. A massive 92% of Singaporeans admit to being stressed at work, compared to the global average of 84%, making it one of the most stressed workforces in the world. Around 1 in 8 find the stress unmanageable, citing ‘always-on’ corporate culture as one of the major causes of unhappiness.
In addition to being one of the most hardworking countries in the region, this year has seen COVID-19 exacerbate stress and burnout more than ever before. With that in mind, taking a break away from the office has never been more important. By strategically using public holidays and weekends to book leave in 2021, you can get long stretches of time off for fewer days, giving you more time to relax and re-energise. Here’s how:

Singapore has a minimum legal requirement of 7 days of annual leave entitlement for employees. However, most employers allow their workers a minimum of 14 days a year, plus an extra day for each additional year at the company. Here are some ways to maximise that time off:
- Friday 25 December 2020 – Sunday 3 January 2021: Book 4 days of leave and get 10 days off
- Friday 12 February – Sunday 21 February: Book 5 days of leave and get 10 days off
- Friday 2 April – Sunday 11 April: Book 5 days of leave and get 10 days off
- Thursday 13 May – Sunday 30 May: Book 10 days of leave and get 18 days off
- Saturday 17 July – Sunday 25 July: Book 4 days of leave and get 9 days off
- Saturday 7 August – Sunday 15 August: 4 days of leave and get 9 days off
- Thursday 4 November – Sunday 14 November: 6 days of leave and get 11 days off
Make 2021 your best year yet for work-life balance.
