The average American gets around 7.6 paid holidays in the US, but with careful planning around public holidays and weekends, it’s possible to get more extended periods off without using all of your vacation days.
As one of the few countries in the world with no paid holidays guaranteed, 76% of Americans consider it very important for companies to provide paid vacation time. With a massive 7 in 10 people admitting to desperately needing a holiday, now is the time to use the days you do have to your advantage for a stress-free 2023.
Planning your holidays in advance can help ensure you take well-earned breaks, maintain work-life balance and avoid burnout – something more than half the US workforce suffered in 2021.

How to plan your vacation days
January
Book four days off to get nine days of holiday
Booking time off around Martin Luther King Day in 2023 can get you a long stretch of time off without costing all your vacation days. Book just four days off and get a refreshing nine-day break from the 14th to the 22nd.
February

With Presidents’ Day on Monday the 20th, you can book a nine-day vacation by booking just four days off and taking advantage of the weekends.
May/June
Book four days off to get nine days of holiday
There are two opportunities to get nine days of summer vacation by giving up just four days in May and June.
If you plan for a vacation starting on May 27th, just before Memorial Day, you’ll be off for a nine-day stretch that ends in early June. Later in the month, you have another chance to do the same. Booking your break around Juneteenth on the 19th gives you another nine-day run that starts on the 17th and ends on the 25th.
July
Book four days off to get nine days of holiday
If you start your break on July 1st and go all the way to the 9th, you’ll get Independence Day off on the 4th. You need to trade just four days to make this nine-day summer vacation happen.
September/October
Book five days off to get ten days of holiday
You have two chances to double your vacation days in September by trading five of your days and getting another five.
In early September, from the 1st to the 10th, booking five days off around weekends and Labor Day on the 4th gives you ten days of holiday.
If you book off from the 30th of September to the 9th of October, you can have 10 days, too. This is because of the weekend and Columbus Day on the 9th.
November
Book four days off to get nine days of holiday
Veteran’s Day falls on a Saturday in 2023, so we get a substitute day on Friday, November 10th. That means if you book four days off, you can get nine days of vacation using the weekends.
Later in November, we have Thanksgiving on the 23rd, which is the country’s most commonly paid vacation day. Booking four days off here gives you another opportunity to get nine days off from the 18th to the 26th.
December
Book four days off to get nine days of holiday
If you book four days off in December, you can get nine days of relaxation that takes you through to January 2024.
