Commercial property is certainly on the up-and-up. Literally, that is. Emporis, a provider of international building data, recently published their list of the top ten skyscrapers currently under construction. The report noted that the average height of these ten skyscrapers is 114m greater than the average of the ten tallest buildings built in the last decade. The sky, it seems, is no longer the limit.
A closer look at these works-in-progress
- Kingdom Tower: The Kingdom Tower, currently under construction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, is projected to stand at a height of 1007 meters, making it the world’s tallest skyscraper and the first to break the 1000m barrier. Work on the tower began in January 2012, and construction is expected to finish in 2017. The Kingdom Tower will have over 200 floors, with the world’s highest observation deck located on the 157th floor.
- Ping An International Finance Centre: Projected to be the world’s second tallest skyscraper, the Ping An International Finance Centre is set for completion in 2016, at a height of 660 metres. Work on the building began in 2010, and when finished, the tower will include offices, shopping arcades, restaurants and roof-top cafes.
- Wuhan Greenland Centre: The Wuhan Greenland Centre, meanwhile, is set to be the world’s third tallest skyscraper when construction is completed in 2017. Situated in Wuhan, China, the tower is expected to reach a height of 636 meters, and will consist of office space, luxury hotel rooms and residential apartments.
- One World Trade Centre: Construction on the One World Trade Centre in New York began in April 2006, and the building is nearing completion. At 541 meters, the iconic tower is the tallest building in the United States, and is ranked at number 7 on the list of tallest towers currently under construction. The height of the building – 1776 feet – is symbolic as a reference to the year in which the US formed the Declaration of Independence. One World Trade Centre is set to open in early 2014.
