According to Glassdoor, 17% more job applications happen in January than in a typical month, which confirms the new year is prime time for those looking to move.
Finally, productivity also takes a dip this time of year. Around 26% say January is their least productive month of the year, with December a close second at 14%, according to Hitachi Capital Invoice Finance research.

While this condition is quite common in the UK and countries with varying seasons, employers should not overlook it as it can seriously affect staff productivity, motivation, morale, and even their physical and mental health.
We’re more prone to irritability in January
Employees can also experience higher irritability in January. This could be because December is officially considered the most stressful month. In 2022, more than a third of people admit to feeling stressed about the festive season, and 67% feel burnt out. January isn’t popular in many areas of the world. In the US, 26% of people say January is their least favourite month, with February a close second at 21%. Around 77% of small businesses in the US say November to February is generally the most stressful period for their teams.
In Australia, data suggests January is the stand-out month for job hunting, with January seeing an almost 22% increase in job listings compared to any other time of the year. This is as businesses prep for the year ahead, knowing more people are likely to be looking to make a move.
Motivating teams during the most challenging months of the year
After the Great Resignation, most businesses will focus on the Great Retention in 2023 to reduce staff turnover. There are a few ways to help people feel more engaged at work at the start of the year.
