However, research suggests working from home has actually led to working more hours. The same technology that has kept businesses ticking along during the pandemic via remote work is also resulting in employees working longer. With all the tools we need to work at our fingertips, the propensity to do more is always there. For many, this may lead to overworking, fatigue, depression, burnout or even eye illnesses from staring at screens.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"color: #99ba14;\">UK workers missed out on \u00a321.9 billion in unpaid overtime in 2020<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/employmentandlabourmarket\/peopleinwork\/labourproductivity\/datasets\/labourproductivity\" target=\"_blank\">ONS data<\/a> shows that although output per worker initially dropped 17.9% in Q2 2020 when the pandemic began, this quickly bounced back by 16.6% in Q3 2020. This suggests that as people have adapted to working from home, their output and the hours they work have increased.<\/p>\n<p>Over 2020, more than\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tuc.org.uk\/news\/welsh-workers-put-ps717-million-worth-unpaid-overtime-last-year-wales-tuc-analysis\" target=\"_blank\">3 million<\/a>\u00a0people worked an average of 7.7 hours a week extra in unpaid overtime \u2014 equivalent to an average of \u00a37,300 a year of unpaid overtime. This means that in total, these workers worked 1.2 billion extra hours and missed out on \u00a321.9 billion in unpaid overtime.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"color: #99ba14;\">Londoners do the most unpaid overtime in the UK<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Certain regions of the UK are more prone to overtime than others. This gives workers the right to take time off and maintain a work-life balance while working from home.<\/p>\n<p>Having left the EU, we can only speculate whether the UK will follow suit with a similar take on the right to disconnect, but <a href=\"https:\/\/prospect.org.uk\/news\/right-to-disconnect\/\" target=\"_blank\">trade unions<\/a> are already pushing for similar legislation in the UK to tackle the trend towards this \u2018always on\u2019 culture and to alleviate\u00a0overworking.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"color: #99ba14;\">Working from home tips to reduce overworking<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>There are plenty of ways to encourage employees to stop overworking themselves and avoid burnout:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Have a dedicated space within the home for work, separate from the rest of the living space. This might not be possible for everyone, but having a study or even just a corner of a room with a desk, chair and laptop\/computer will help create a mental boundary between working and relaxing.<\/li>\n<li>Diary blocking on days where there are urgent tasks, for lunch breaks and while out of office will help prevent overworking beyond office hours and remind employees when it\u2019s time to take a break or stop for the day.<\/li>\n<li>Being transparent about capacity and learning to say \u2018no\u2019 to non-urgent tasks during busy times will help task management and ensure employees don\u2019t take on too much at once.<\/li>\n<li>Turning off work devices and logging out of apps like Skype, Teams and Zoom outside of office hours will prevent being distracted by work commitments outside of office hours.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>\u201cWellbeing in a more dispersed environment needs broader action sets \u2014 something which we have endeavoured to be at the leading edge of at Instant. As well as tactical actions such as those listed above, we prioritise being a purpose-driven organisation where people feel part of something bigger, ensuring our recognition practices are dialled up. We award additional annual leave to encourage our people to take meaningful blocks of time off work. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Additional injections of wellbeing support in the form of podcasts and webinars from industry leaders on mental health, breathing, resilience and more assure employees that it is okay to talk. We have also recently launched a new section of our website that provides further support for all elements of wellbeing, including financial, mental and physical health. As we look at returning to the office, all companies have an opportunity to define a workspace strategy that aligns business strategy with supporting the wellbeing and engagement of its employees.
