The corporate world in the United States is abuzz with discussion following the release of the Glassdoor Employment Satisfaction Report Card by City. This report takes an in-depth look at the working environment in 50 of the country’s largest metropolitan areas, measuring employment satisfaction in each of these cities by considering the following factors:
• Overall satisfaction rating
• Compensation and benefits satisfaction rating
• Senior management satisfaction rating
• Business outlook for the next six months
• Number of employees hiring (as of 1 June 2013)
This data has allowed Glassdoor to rank the US’ 50 most popular cities in which to work. Here’s a look at the top five in ascending order, and some details about what makes them so attractive.
5. Washington DC
Overall satisfaction rating: 3.3
While federal government jobs and tourism sector jobs are naturally a prominent part of the Washington economy, it is also home to a large number of corporations and three Fortune 500 companies; Pepco, Danaher and Fannie Mae. The Glassdoor report card shows that nearly 7,500 DC employers are currently hiring, with a strong demand for program managers and systems engineers in the business sector, and registered nurses in the healthcare sector.
4. Salt Lake City
Overall satisfaction rating: 3.3
Glassdoor revealed that around 2,000 Salt Lake City employers are currently looking for new hires.Over the years, Utah’s capital has seen its economy evolve into a highly service-oriented one. Software engineers, sales associates and customer service reps are currently in great demand.
3. Seattle
Overall satisfaction rating: 3.4
Approximately 4,000 Seattle employers of all sizes are currently looking for new hires. The most commonly available positions are sales associates, software engineers and of course, baristas. These findings, coupled with a 3.4 rating for both overall satisfaction and compensation and benefits satisfaction, makes Seattle the United States’ third most popular city among employees.The infamously rainy city and seaport in Washington State is home to some major international brands, including Starbucks and Amazon.
2. San Francisco
Overall satisfaction rating: 3.4
The City by the Bay boasts a high overall rating, a 50% business improvement outlook and many enticing factors that make it a highly desirable location to work in. San Francisco is a stone’s throw from the world famous hub of Silicon Valley, where Facebook and a number of Glassdoor’s “top places to work” are based. It’s also home to an impressive number of Fortune 500 companies, such as Visa and Wells Fargo. Over 6,400 San Francisco employers are hiring, with online sales reps, sales associates and software engineers being the most in-demand positions.
1. San Jose
Overall satisfaction rating: 3.4
At the top of the chart, holding the title for America’s most popular city for workers is another West Coast City, California’s sunny San Jose. The Silicon Valley business hub and its surrounding suburbs are widely known as the home of prestigious tech companies such as Google, Apple, LinkedIn, Cisco and Adobe. These corporations are typically associated with designer office space, great perks, and a balance of hard work and intellect with creativity and fun. More than 3,500 employers in the city are hiring, with software engineers, program managers and sales associates listed as the top three most in-demand occupations.
